* Machair is a Gaelic word meaning fertile, low lying grassy plain. It is one of the rarest habitats in Europe and it occurs mainly on the exposed western coast of Scotland and the Hebrides. Here sand, made up mainly of crushed shells, is regularly blown ashore by the frequent gales. Over time the calcium rich sand, combined with traditional crofting practices, have led to a fertile grassland habitat, renowned for it’s wildflowers, birds and insect life.
